Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use private medical insurance to pay for my treatment?

SPC is registered with all the major insurance companies. We do advise that you contact your insurance company prior to commencing treatment to ensure that your claim is processed properly. You should always bring your policy details and claim reference number with you.

Can I refer myself or do I need a letter from my doctor?

Self referral is accepted and encouraged although we always maintain contact with our medical colleagues. However, some insurance companies do require a GP referral, but you will have already contacted your insurance company before you come to us!

What qualifications will my Physio have?

All Physiotherapists at SPC have a degree or Diploma in physiotherapy and are registered with the Health Professions Council (the regulatory body) ensuring that they adhere to strict standards of care. Ongoing development of their skills is encouraged to ensure the highest standards. Some physiotherapists have extra training in specialist areas, such as acupuncture.

How long are the appointments?

Each appointment lasts for approximately 40 minutes.

How many treatments will I need?

Treatment plans are tailored to the individual patient. You may require only one session for advice and self management or you may require a longer period of ongoing treatment dependent on the condition. There is no obligation to undertake a long course of treatment. Your physiotherapist will discuss your treatment plan at your initial consultation.

What will happen at my appointment?

The physiotherapist will take a history of the condition; they will also need to know of any other medical conditions you may have or any medication you may be taking. They will also want to know about your lifestyle – occupation, hobbies etc – as these can all influence the cause of your symptoms and how you may recover. They will then conduct a thorough physical examination of the appropriate area to locate the problem. After then discussing the best treatment options for your condition they will proceed with appropriate treatment as agreed between you.

Can I bring someone with me?

You can be accompanied by a friend or member of your family if you wish. We will ask you to complete a ‘Consent to treatment’ form before your initial assessment. You can request a chaperone if you do not wish to be alone with the therapist or feel vulnerable at any time.

Do I need to bring anything?

You do not need to bring anything specific but a pair of shorts may be useful if you have a lower limb problem. We advise that you wear loose, comfortable clothing as you may be asked to undress to expose the problem area.
